The municipality (PT: concelho) Lourinha is situated at the West Coast of Portugal, also called the Silver Coast. It’s located at the extreme north-west of the district of Lisbon, with more or less 70 kms driving from Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal.  At the north of the concelho, you can find the concelho of Peniche and Obidos, at the south the concelho of Torres Vedras and at the east, the concelho of Bombarral and Cadaval. At the West of Lourinha, you can find the beautiful Atlantic Ocean, a coast of more or less 12 km, ideal for surfers and families.  Here are some popular beaches as:

  • Praia de Areal
  • Praia da Areia Branca
  • Praia do Canical
  • Praia de Paimogo
  • Praia de Vale Frades
  • Praia de Porto das Barcas
  • Praia da Peralta

When you go up north from Lisbon, the coasts are more and more with rocks. The coast from Lourinha, Ribamar, and Atalaia is very high and rocky.

The Silver Coast

The whole concelho of Lourinha is integrated in the ‘Vale de Tejo’ and the Lisbon region.  It has an area of 146 km2 and has more than 26 000 citizens. Eighty percent of the total area consists of agriculture (namely Pera Rocha, wine and potatoes)

Lourinha is easy accessible through the national roads (N8-2, N247, N361) which connects cities as Lisboa, Torres Vedras, Caldas da Rainha, Obidos and Bombarral.  The recently constructed highway A8 makes Lourinha even more accessible than it was before. But it is a toll-highway. A trip between Lisbon and Lourinha costs 3,20 EUR (2017).  If you dont want to use a car, there are a lot of busses coming and going from Lourinha.

Because of the nearness of the Atlantic ocean, we have an Atlantic climate in Lourinha.  Subsequently, in the summer the temperatures go up to 24 to 30 degrees. During the winter, negative temperatures are rare, but, in 2005, there was some snow in the municipality.   Most importantly, the yearly average temperature throughout the whole year is 16 degrees.

Economy

The economy of Lourinha consists mainly of agriculture, fishing, retail, civil engineering, and industry.  Pingo Doce, a famous supermarket in Portugal, opened his doors in July 2008, which created 80 work spots.  The ‘mercado municipal da Lourinha’, located in the center of Lourinha, has different kinds of products. There you can find fruit, vegetables, fish, meat, alcoholic drinks, and clothes.  There are three butchers and a restaurant at the 1st floor.

Lourinha is one of the regions with a nice climate for wine production.  There is the influence of the sea and the vegetation that go well together. Most importantly, it has a production of brandy that is the best brandy in Portugal! The third best of Europe, behind Cognac and Armagnac.
